Salting our freshwater lakes.

چکیده
The highest densities of lakes on Earth are in north temperate ecosystems, where increasing urbanization and associated chloride runoff can salinize freshwaters and threaten lake water quality and the many ecosystem services lakes provide. However, the extent to which lake salinity may be changing at broad spatial scales remains unknown, leading us to first identify spatial patterns and then investigate the drivers of these patterns. Significant decadal trends in lake salinization were identified using a dataset of long-term chloride concentrations from 371 North American lakes. Landscape and climate metrics calculated for each site demonstrated that impervious land cover was a strong predictor of chloride trends in Northeast and Midwest North American lakes. As little as 1% impervious land cover surrounding a lake increased the likelihood of long-term salinization. Considering that 27% of large lakes in the United States have >1% impervious land cover around their perimeters, the potential for steady and long-term salinization of these aquatic systems is high. This study predicts that many lakes will exceed the aquatic life threshold criterion for chronic chloride exposure (230 mg L-1), stipulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the next 50 y if current trends continue.

A new molluscivore crab from Lake Poso confirms multiple colonization of ancient lakes in Sulawesi by freshwater crabs (Decapoda: Brachyura)
Ancient lakes are among the most stable freshwater environments on our planet, with a species richness far exceeding that of younger and less stable limnic habitats. Compared with the African rift lakes, the ancient lakes of the Indonesian island Sulawesi have received less attention, and their fauna has not been satisfactorily explored. Here, we present results on the freshwater crabs from the...
متن کاملIron Biogeochemistry and Its Environmental Impacts in Freshwater Lakes
Iron is an essential element for almost all living species. Its environmental impacts on physiology and ecology of aquatic organisms are always the focus of limnology and oceanography. To gain insight into iron biogeochemistry and its environmental impacts in freshwater lakes, we collected and reviewed numerous studies on iron in combination with our own work. Our review reports iron sources, i...
متن کاملDistribution and Modeled Transport of Plastic Pollution in the Great Lakes, the World's Largest Freshwater Resource
Most plastic pollution originates on land. As such, freshwater bodies serve as conduits for the transport of plastic litter to the ocean. Understanding the concentrations and fluxes of plastic litter in freshwater ecosystems is critical to our understanding of the global plastic litter budget and underpins the success of future management strategies. We conducted a replicated field survey of su...
متن کاملA novel ion-exclusion chromatography-mass spectrometry method to measure concentrations and cycling rates of carbohydrates and amino sugars in freshwaters.
The concentrations of free neutral carbohydrates and amino sugars were determined in freshwater samples of distinct matrix complexity, including meso-, eu- and dystrophic lakes and ponds, using high-performance ion-exclusion chromatography (HPIEC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS). In contrast to other methods, our approach allowed the quantification of free neutral carbohydrates and amino suga...
متن کاملBacterial Dormancy Is More Prevalent in Freshwater than Hypersaline Lakes
Bacteria employ a diverse array of strategies to survive under extreme environmental conditions but maintaining these adaptations comes at an energetic cost. If energy reserves drop too low, extremophiles may enter a dormant state to persist. We estimated bacterial dormancy and identified the environmental variables influencing our activity proxy in 10 hypersaline and freshwater lakes across th...
